IT is common these days to find either no or seriously weak cellphone signals in various parts of Karachi. One can understand the anxiety on the part of relevant authorities to pre-empt any eventuality close to police stations and such other government offices, but issues arising out of this step also deserve to be paid due attention to. Apart from general inconvenience to the public, doctors, paramedical staff and other workers of emergency or essential services cannot be reached if they happen to be living in the vicinity of the offices of law-enforcement agencies.
The authorities need to come up with some alternative way of ensuring the safety of one and all without compromising the everyday reality on such a sustained basis.
