امریکہ کی ایک کمپنی نے پوری دنیا کو وائے فائے کے ذریعے انٹرنیٹ کی سہولت مفت فراہم کرنے کے منصوبے پر کام کرنے کا اعلان کر دیا۔

Post By : Mustafa Tahir

Darkness in the City of Lights

Post By : Javeria Kamran.

Karachi is continuously facing militancy at its height since the war on terror started in Asia. Terror attacks, target killing and bomb blasts, all refer to various forms of terrorism and all of these terms are not alien to anyone living in Karachi. Karachi was not made only for the Muslims only but now it seems so because of the daily incidences of social & religious radicalism. The idea behind Pakistan was to make a secular country on the lines of Islamic ideology; however with the passage of time and the way the events took the country, the core ideology was lost. All the core issues like corruption, political insensibility, terrorism and murders highlight the name of this country on the international level as a homeland of corrupt & dishonest people.
The problem of terrorism in Karachi has grown rapidly in the last few years because of freedom of media, which presented fake scholars and religious extremists pretending to be sincere with the nation. As a result, the credibility of a modern country deteriorated, resulting in less security and lowering living conditions. Root causes of the terrorism that are prevailing in the Karachi are following.

•Religious Terrorism
•Social Terrorism
•Political Terrorism

Religious Terrorism:
•Attacks on the non-Muslims
•Violence in the name of religion
•Media’s extra involvement in the religion by presenting counterfeit scholars which people trust on whose views and guidelines the society at large acts.

All above facts show the dark side of religious Pakistan. There are severe threats to the Pakistan internal security and stability that it has to face in the name of religious rights & freedom. The event of “Lal Masjid” is one of the exact examples of the religious extremism. Another threat to Pakistan is the “Jihadi Tanmzeemen” like Taliban and it is because of these extremists i.e. secret agencies of NWFP that Pakistan is being called as a terrorist country.

Social Terrorism:
Social Terrorism refers to the thinking process, way of perceiving different things and the actions that are the building blocks of any society. Pakistanis overall are very conservative and they have their own interest and preferences. A large section of the society does not bother about the country and don’t have feeling of patriotism. One of the major causes of the masses turning around like this is high rates of inflation, economic instability and intertwined family structure. There are also some areas where people feel it pride for them to kill their enemies, they don’t care about laws and orders of the state.

Political Terrorism:
The worse part of Karachi package of problems is its political authorities, who are masters of corruption and extremely self-seeking people. Political personality’s ion this country believes on just bogus claims and to criticize others and don’t feel their responsibilities against their authorities and positions. It is well known that who are responsible for the target killing in Karachi, are against the singular solidarity of Pakistan and want its various institutions to clash amongst themselves, but nobody has the courage to take action against them. Causing an overall role in the rise of Terrorism in Karachi, however, firm actions still wait to be acted upon.

Think Outside the Bun

Post By : Javeria Kamran.

Time has changed; parents no more decide the future of their children. They are happy to let their children study subjects of their choice and decide their career. Children also need to be extremely careful while choosing the field of study. They shouldn’t listen to their friends or choose the field of study which is popular among their friends instead they should explore their own abilities and interests and choose the field of study which suits their abilities and interest. However only choosing the right field of study is not enough; they also need to be consistent and hard working for a successful academic career. Here i will list a few tips for studying which should help students.

Tips for Studying

•Peaceful environment is the basic need for study. Keep the environment around you peaceful during your study hours so that any other thoughts don’t come into your mind and you can focus fully on your study.
•Don’t take study as the burden but take it as a responsibility and with interest for a successful career afterwards.
•Taking study as responsibility doesn’t mean that you should be thinking about your studies all the time. This will only add to a stress so study with a smart studying schedule and don’t let it affect your social life.
•Sitting attentively and paying attention in class is also a key to a successful academic career. Before the class read the outline of the topic which your teacher is meant to teach you.
•Make notes in every class and highlight the topics on which teacher stress more because they are likely to come in exam.
•Don’t forget to read the notes that you made in class at home. This helps to understand the topic and you don’t have extra preparation burden during preparation for the exam.
•If you have any confusion during the lecture then doesn’t be hesitant and ask your teacher immediately to clear your doubts.
•If you don’t understand the accent of your teacher or you are unable to understand him because he delivers lecture too fast then consider taking a tape recorder with you in class. Record the lecture and listen to it again at home.
•The subject or topic which you find boring study it first at home.
•While studying turn off all the sources that can cause disturbance like cell phone and computer so that you can fully focus on the study.
•It is a good idea to take short breaks during your study hours like about 10 minutes after every topic to freshen your mind.
•Make best use of weekends review all the difficult topics during the week and clear your doubts related to it if you have any.

Karachi University Book Fair

Post By : Muhammed Saad.

A three-day book fair organised by the Students Aid Project (SAP) of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) was inaugurated at the University of Karachi, on Tuesday. The huge crowd of students were in searching to find a good book at reasonable price.

The book fair consists of more than 100 stalls with books on various subjects of Science, Arts and Commerce. 10% to 20% discount is offered on the books to make it affordable for every student.

Some book sellers didnt interest in selling a book. I,myself purchased a nowel of namra ahmad ‘’Mashaf’’ at 200 rupees only at discount whose actual price is 300 rupees. So, it was really discount for me to buy a nowel. While after purchase, i saw same nowel price at 380 rupees from different stall.

In my opinion,Books open windows to new ideas, new worlds and doors to adventures but busy life style of modern age has resulted in considerable decline of book reading habit.

Students should take interest in reading the books to gain knowledge .

Facebook Depression

Post By : Syeda Kulsum Ali.

Many teens enjoy keeping in touch with their friends on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, but using such sites to
excess can be unhealthy and has even been linked to depression, researchers say.

A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics describes a new phenomenon known as " Facebook depression," in which children and teenagers spend an inordinate amount of time on social networking sites, then develop symptoms of depression.

The phenomenon is not common, and most children benefit from the site because they are able to maintain ties with friends and feel a connection with their community, said Scott Campbell, an assistant professor of communication studies at the University of Michigan.

But heavy use of Facebook, as well as other risks of the online world such as cyberbullying and sexting, can have serious consequences, so it's critical for parents to stay involved in their children's lives.

"As kids have increasingly open lines of communication with their peers online, it is extremely important that parents keep the lines of communication with their kids just as open so they can have a sense of what is going on in their social lives ... both online and offline,"
Campbell said.

Basant Festival

Post By : Muhammed Saad.

Basant is celebrated on February 24 by flying colorful kites in the air, from rooftops, from fields, and from any open place they can get to. It is celebrated to ring in the warmer spring weather, and say farewell to the winter. During the past ten years, some aristocrats of Lahore have introduced basant as a local popular festival.

Although Basant is a fun time for the most part, kite flying on the festival of Basant has had it's share of protests and conflicts in the past, due to the rise of accidental deaths that occur on this day from kite flyers falling off roofs, or bicyclists being cut from unseen string as they pass by someone flying a kite.

Some people even have gone as far as to tie glass and metal to their strings as they participate in "kite fights" which ultimately ruined some Basant holidays.

Pakistani government banned kite flying in 2005, and kite flying is prohibited on all other days except on the Basant festival days due to the dangers kite flying normally has in such a congested city of millions like Lahore.

The main truth is that for the majority of law abiding Pakistanis, this is a time for celebration, family, and using strong caution. Most Pakistanis do adhere to safety rules established by the Pakistani police and stay safe during what is supposed to be the most colorful festivals of the year.

What is mobile number? What is your smile number? Just buy one!!!

Post By : Aasma Shakeel.

Disregarding the prevalence of the digital era and the ever-increasing technological advancements, the need for cellular gadgets has increased drastically in Pakistan. With the country evolving as a war zone, rife with weapons, bombs, bloodshed and crime, there is a dire need to be in constant communication. If something bad happens, one should always be just a phone call away.

It is said that communication gadgets are a blessing in disguise, but that may not necessarily be true for a country like Pakistan. An ad in a ‘C’ grade evening newspaper reads as follows: “You are young and peppy but alone. Want to make sizzling and beautiful friends, then what are you waiting for …We are here to meet your desire. Numbers of school, college and university girls are available at very humble prize. Our contact number is…!”

Not only are girls in Pakistan unsafe leaving the comforts of their own home, but are now also being stripped off their privacy by having their cell phone numbers plastered all over the internet, made easily accessible to anyone.

It is certain that a majority of female inhabitants in Pakistan have faced an uncomfortable, stressful situation involving an often illiterate stranger on the opposite end of a call, begging them for their ‘frandship’ and bombarding them with text messages on a daily basis. Being able to subscribe to cheap text message packages and acquiring mobile phones as cheap as 800 rupees only heightens this predicament.

Most phone numbers are leaked from easy-load shops, common to the lower class population with only a few bucks on hand and the desperate need to place a call or send a text. These numbers are sold from anywhere between 10 to 100 rupees, providing anonymous stalkers incomprehensible pleasure at extremely low-cost. The government seriously needs to intervene to curb this growing nuisance and enforce cellphone ethics and privacy protection laws as soon as possible as the issue continues to get out of hand.

What is mobile number? What is your smile number? Quick ladies, kar lay tu hide number!

Things you should or shouldn’t do when appointed as an internee

Post : Basmah Laiq.

One thing is certain: when you're an intern, you have to work twice as hard to do everyone's grunt work in the office and still somehow manage to get valuable experience, make connections and contacts and get maximum exposure for your work and it is not that easy.

During my internship program, things I learned to do or not to do are listed below.

•Be enthusiastic: It will be seen and you will be given good work.
•Ask questions: Do not irritate your seniors, NEVER! Ask genuine questions.
•Be smart: No one likes training dumb cows. Be smart!
•Take notes: You might have a good, big brain but people forget.
•Find a mentor: Not everyone will be willing to teach, find one and stick to him.
•Find work: Go on a treasure hunt and look for work from seniors.
•Do donkey work: Its boring but sure shot way to be successful someday.
•Be on time: No one likes to see the red mark on an attendance book.
•Don’t misuse: Office phone, internet and printers are OFFICE’s phone, internet and printers.
•Be yourself: You are not somebody else so please don’t try to be.
•Never countdown the hours or minutes until you get off.
•Don’t brag: Sometimes you got to work on top secret projects that you shouldn’t talk about because they haven’t been revealed yet.
•Don’t burn bridges: Even if you hated working with somebody with every ounce of your soul, don’t tell that person off on your last day. Don’t decide you’re never going to talk to that person again. It’s a mistake.
•ENJOY!!

You may approach an internship as an audition for a full-time job with a company. Apply yourself to the internship as if it’s a permanent, full-time job, and it might turn into one. Companies are always looking for dedicated, hard-working individuals. If you use your internship to demonstrate your abilities, they won't want to let you go.

5 Best Web Browsers for Windows 2014

In 2014, users got lots of options and which clearly means that it is very easy to get confused between which web browsers to use. I’m mentioning down here the list with little information/details of 5 best web browsers for Windows 2014. If you’re looking forweb browser for Windows 8 then all 5 mentioned down here can be your options.

Google Chrome

No other web browser can beat it in competition. Google has developed it and it has been coded on the Chromium source code (open source). It is simple, very clean, very easy to use and elegant as well. It is integrated with all Google Services like Gmail, Drive, Google Maps, etc.

It uses latest version of software and internet technologies to provide fastest web browsing speed to the users but it count too much on the performance of PC which is its only disadvantage.

You can download it for free and it updates automatically whenever there is any newer version of it is available. It never ask you to update it, this is another good feature.

It also got Chrome store where you can find thousands of apps and extensions which are ready to be used and to increase functionality of the Google Chrome. In one word, there is no competition to this web browser.

Mozilla Firefox

It has been available before Google Chrome and it is the only one which can compete well against Chrome. It is fast, simple, reliable, elegant and got anything you’re looking for in a web browser.

It is available for free and it also doesn’t count on the performance too much which is its advantage over Chrome. If you want to keep Firefox as your web browser just because it was there before Chrome then it only depends on you.

Torch Web Browser

If you want download manager, social sharing options and few other features included by default in your web browser then you need to try this out. Torch web browser is right now the best alternative to Chrome and Firefox and it is available for free.

It has been developed on the same source code as of Google Chrome i.e. Chromium source code and I’m sure you’re going to like its UI and every other features.

Opera

This is another option which you can try. It is fast, reliable, simple and provides all other features provided by all above listed web browsers. It is also available for free.

IE or Safari

Last 5th option is a tie. You can either use latest version of Internet Explorer or Safari web browser. If your PC is not supporting IE 10 or 11 version then it is better to use Safari web browser which is developed by Apple Corporation.

Trust in Allah

"If you had all relied on Allah (SWT) as you
should rely on Him, then He would have provided
for you as He provides for the birds, who wake up
hungry in the morning and return with full
stomachs at dusk."

Do you truly have full trust in Allah (SWT)? There
are some of us who strive our utmost to prepare
for things wherein no certainty exists, whilst
others fail to prepare for certain things wherein
lies no doubt. And let us not forget those that
believe their destiny is completely in their own
hands, whilst their counterparts hold, in what can
only be described as 'bravery', that they have full
trust in Allah (SWT), thus granting themselves the
ticket to do nothing at all.

Tawakkul is a light for our hearts and a means for
us to seek nearness towards Allah (SWT) in a
manner that absolutely nothing else can achieve.
The essence of this quality of the heart is built
upon two very important pillars: dependence upon
Allah and trust in Allah.

We may often trust a person, without necessarily
depending upon them, and likewise we may
depend upon a person without fully trusting them.
However when it comes to Our Lord (SWT), both
exist simultaneously in perfection. So why are we
so ready to trust others, but so quick to question
Allah (SWT)? I'm sure we can all recall at least
one incident in our lives when we experienced the
rahma of Allah (SWT) in disguise. What did we
do? What did we say? When one of the
innumerable blessings we failed to count and
thank our Lord for was unexpectedly taken from
us, what thoughts rushed to our minds? What
regrettable words came from our mouths? Why
has this happened? What did I do wrong? Why
has my blessing been taken away from me? Such
spur of the moment questions, tainted by our
false comprehension that the blessings bestowed
upon us belonged to us, in an instant, shakes our
building of tawakkul, sometimes causing it to
collapse, consequently opening up a door for our
enemy -Shaytaan and closing a door for us to
Our Beloved (SWT).

Sisters, why do we become so devastated at the
onset of calamity? Why do we lose all hope? Why
do we not simply trust in Allah (SWT)? For every
goodness and blessing we own has only been by
His Rahma (Mercy). The amaanah (trusts) within
our possessions are only ours for a temporary
period of time; they belong to Allah and one day
we'll have to return them to Him (SWT). When
something is taken away from us or we are faced
with a calamity, always remember that Allah is
testing our Eemaan (faith) and He (SWT) knows
that we are strong enough to deal with it,
otherwise it would never have come to us in the
first place, for Allah (SWT) never burdens a soul
with more than it can bear.

Have full Tawakkul (trust) in Allah (SWT) and
never belittle that trust. For the trust we have in
Allah is a path to success and a means to
achieving victory. Never lose hope and always
remember that the situation of a true believer is
always one of goodness: For when they are
granted a blessing from Allah (SWT) they praise
Him and due to that they are rewarded and their
blessings increase and when a calamity strikes
they patiently persevere, and as a result of which
they are rewarded and granted something better
than what they lost.

Put your trust in Allah. Allah loves those that
trust [in Him].

[Surah al-Imran 3: 159]
Know that Allah (SWT) is pleased with those
servants who persevere and He (SWT) loves
those that trust in Him. Build a strong foundation
of trust and allow for it to accompany you in all
that you do. For it is a quality that will remain
sufficient for you in the matters of this world, your
deen (religion) and in the Aakhira (hereafter)
insha'Allah. A beautiful example that never fails
to touch my heart is that of our mother: Umm
Salamah (RA), when her husband Abu Salamah
(RA) passed away and she remained steadfast,
uttering the best statement at the time of any
calamity: 'Inna Lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji'oon -
Surely to Allah we belong and surely to Him we
will return'. And she received exactly as Allah
(SWT) promises: blessings and mercy:
'And give good news to those who persevere,
those who say, when a misfortune strikes them,
Surely to Allah we belong, and surely to Him we
will return, these are the ones on whom blessings
from their Lord descend, and mercy, and these are
the ones who are rightly guided'.

[Surah Al-Baqarah 2: 155-157]
For who could be better as a husband than
Rasoolullah (SAW) -A gift to our mother, Umm
Salamah (RA) for her tawakkul in Allah (SWT).
It may seem difficult to imagine, and I don't make
out that it's always the easiest of things to do.
However, with complete conviction, as I too have
witnessed such a great blessing from Allah (SWT)
after a calamity had befallen me, that if you truly
trust in your Lord, with every atom's weight of
your heart, Allah will provide for you in ways you
could never have imagined.
Let us take a moment to ponder over one ayah in
the Qur'an, yes, just one ayah. If I asked you to
guess which ayah it is, what would you say?
Would it even cross your mind that you read this
ayah without fail in every single rakat (standing)
of your salah?
'You Alone we worship and You Alone we ask for
help'

[Surah al-Faatihah: 5] "The Opening"
This ayah clearly establishes the tawakkul of the
believer. Some of the Salaf (early believers) have
said, "Al-Faatihah is the secret of the Qur'an,
while these words are the secret of Al-Faatihah."
So how can we stand before Allah day in and day
out, uttering such perfect words of tawakkul, and
yet not sincerely mean them? For belief,
undoubtedly, must be followed by action.
Our Lord (SWT) With His Hikmah, Love and
Rahmah knows exactly what is good for us, so let
us not be amongst the sinful servants of Allah
(SWT) who suspect Him of wrongdoing. So the
next time you stand before Allah (SWT) and
consult Him in your affairs, don't think He'll give
you what is good for you; know with certainty
that He (SWT) will:

Facebook's Whatsapp adding Voice Calls

WhatsApp, the globally popular texting app that Facebook just acquired for a whopping $19 billion, is adding phone calls to its list of services.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum said the voice service will be free and begin rolling out to users within the next few months.

Currently, WhatsApp offers unlimited text and voice-mail messages between users. Its service is free for the first year, then costs 99 cents annually.

"We want to make sure people always have the ability to stay in touch with their friends and loved ones really affordably," Koum said in a speech at Mobile World Congress.

As reported by multiple news outlets, Koum also announced that WhatsApp now has 465 million monthly users and 330 million daily users. The latter is 15 million more than what was made public last week when Facebook announced the purchase.

Voice service will come first to Apple devices and Google's Android operating system, with Windows phones and Blackberry to follow.

The move puts WhatsApp in competition not only with other messaging apps that offer voice but chat tools such as Skype and even mobile carriers. WhatsApp's unlimited texting has already helped establish it in places where smartphones and fancy data plans are less common.

It has 40 million users in India and another 38 million in Brazil, two countries highly coveted by tech companies such as Facebook for their large populations and emerging mobile customer base. WhatsApp hasn't released figures for the United States, where it is less popular.

Last week, Facebook shocked the business world when it announced it was buying WhatsApp for up to $19 billion in cash and stock by far the social network's largest acquisition to date.

Child Labour

The figures are troubling and Child labour is steadily becoming a unifying social economic problem among the developed and undeveloped countries.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that is based on a nation wide survey of child trafficking, approximately 19% of school children and 40% of street children have been forced into the child labour.

Child labour includes different types of activities like poultry farms at early age due to the scarcity.

However, they do not get profit continuously due to unhealthy conditions.

Bird flu is one of the kind of fever in chicken which often destroy the poultry farms and children working there also come into the hazardous air of that deadly fever.

Therefore, I think to get rid of such problems and hurdles, the people should be provided with the education, training and development skills.

The Apple Kid

A teacher teaching Maths to a seven-year-old child asked him, “If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?”Within a few seconds Laiq replied confidently, “Four!”
The dismayed teacher was expecting an effortless correct answer, three but she was disappointed. “Maybe the child did not listen properly.” – she thought to herself.

She repeated, “Laiq, listen carefully. If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?”
Laiq had seen the disappointment on his teacher’s face. He calculated again on his fingers. His search for the answer was not for the correct one, but the one that will make his teacher happy.

This time hesitatingly he again replied, “Four.”

The disappointment stayed on the teacher’s face but she remembered that Laiq liked strawberries.

She thought maybe he does not like apples and that is making him loose focus. This time with an exaggerated excitement she asked, “If I give you one strawberry and one strawberry and one strawberry, then how many you will have?”
Seeing the teacher happy, young Laiq calculated on his fingers again. There was no pressure on him now and with a hesitating smile young Laiq replied, “Three?”

The teacher now had a victorious smile. Her approach had succeeded.

But one last thing remained. Once again she asked him, “Now if I give you one apple and one apple and one more apple how many will you have?”

Quickly the child answered, “Four!”

The teacher was shocked. “How Laiq, how?” she demanded in a little stern and irritated voice.
In a voice that was low and hesitating young Laiq replied, “Because I already have one apple in my bag.”
Summing up, the whole idea behind the story is not to amuse you but to make you understand that if someone gives you an answer that is different from you expectations then there must be a reason behind it. You only have to search for that angle which you may not have thought about yet!

Making Friends

“A fiend or a friend; you can make it! 10 Ways to Have More Friends, A stranger today a friend tomorrow”. These are some of the topics we mostly come across when looking for some specific technique of making good friends with people. Well in actual nothing like this works!

One of the authors made a strong impact on me by stating that there is only one person who can both teach me how to make friends and at the same time become my best friend. That person is none other than “ME”. The author’s contention is that if a person cannot make friends with whom he is most intimately related to, then he cannot make friends with any other person.

Such a unique perspective stands to reason because to make friends we must know who we really are and to which gathering of friends we belong to. Another fact of importance lies in the other person of what he is like. We must be prepared to accept both oneself and the other person's strengths and weaknesses without being judgmental about it.

Personally I believe that if I know that if I can learn to accept myself despite and because of my qualities, then I would be cultivating in me the most important requirement to making friends a sit would make it easier for others to interact with me.
On the same note, another requirement to making friends is for one to be true to oneself and others that sums up to being sincere. Without the element of sincerity no friendship can survive and last forever. It would be better to dissolve at that time or else you will end up having fake friends.

Instead of striving to achieve someone’s friendship or a situation we must learn to relax and just be who we really are, which will make our potential friend feel comfortable in our company.

Hence more accurately speaking people do not really make friends but discover them.

As the saying goes:
"If you go looking for a friend, you're going to find they're very scarce but if you go out to be a friend, you'll find them everywhere."( ZigZiglar)

In a new trend, that is spreading like wildfire around Pakistan, almost everyone is ditching their old Sony Cyber shots for state of the art cameras with the ability to zoom in perfectly. This is all in a bid to capture the same moments you normally would – except in higher resolution.

More than half the people who own an expensive DSLR do so because somehow it is the new iPod – a necessary item to be possessed by anyone who wants to feel ‘accepted’. It is kind of like having the best backpack was in the 2nd grade, and the Best Pokemon cards were in the 8th grade.

The worst part is that most of the people who own a DSLR have no real knowledge of how to properly use their device, but just because they own one, their entire posse exalts them to the level of some great photographer.

Suddenly, a picture of the sky will seem gorgeous. A stray dog on the corner of your street will seem like the perfect picture to represent the “conditions of your mulk, yo.”

Naturally, you run around everywhere with your camera – poking it into random areas and trying to look sophisticated adjusting settings (of course you are just fiddling with the buttons figuring out their functions.)

It doesn’t matter whether you take a picture of your friends striking awkward poses or a picture of an open sewer line, they will be filed under the same folder. That folder will ingeniously be named ‘Randoms’. No matter what picture you upload, it will be showered with praise. The pixels will transcend all worldly boundaries and attain a level of absolute beauty. Plato will roll over in his grave.

Beneath your photo of the gutter will appear generous comments:
“This picture is beautiful, bro. It speaks to me”
“You are so talented, man” is the comment you will receive on the 1,200 consecutive picture you have taken of the same cloud.

Yes sir, your photographic talent will break all known conventions. You are probably as talentless as you were without a camera, but in the race for social ranking your reputation will ascend by leaps and bounds. You will attach irrelevant meanings to everything you see; becoming one with the universe through your lens.

You will scoff when your friend will pull out an old, traditional digital camera.

Very few of you will ever go through the hassle of learning techniques and improving skills to turn the hobby into a career. But for the majority, this niche of individuals will be forgotten. Their expensive Nikons and Canons are the loves of their lives – for a while.

Food security should be Top priority of Pakistan

Experts from various disciplines gathered at the Climate Change Conference in Karachi stressed a dire need for research on the issue in Pakistan as it ranked amongst countries highly vulnerable to the phenomena.

The conference, organised by Habib University, highlighted the urgent need to incorporate climate change adaptation into the national climate policy. The keynote speaker, Dr Bruce McCarl, a disitinguised professor of Agricultural Economic at Texas A&M University, sounded the alarm and advised the government of Pakistan to put a special emphasis on saving it agricultural sector, first and foremost since it was most sensitive to extreme weather.

McCarl, who was also part of the Noble Peace Prize winning team of Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007, said, "From agricultural point of view, Pakistan should focus on its most staple crops like Wheat" because food security should be the top priority in the climate change scenario.

Shafqat Kakakhel, chairperson of Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) said that Pakistan was prone to natural disasters and was frequently facing an increase in floods, droughts and other extreme events.

Kakakhel also stressed the need for educational institutes to introduce climate change and environment policy in the school curriculum.

Climate change and the role of media was the subject of another important panel discussion at the conference where Rina Saeed Khan, a prominent writer on environment, said in her presentation that though Pakistan was one the lowest emitters of green house gases in the world it remained highly susceptible to the climate uncertainties.

Her presentation touched upon the hurdles of communicating climate change phenomenon to the masses in local languages without losing its impact.

Muhammad Badar Alam, the editor of Herald Magazine, was also of the opinion that there was a serious lack of credible information about climate change as the government departments were often tight lipped about the dissemination of information about the issue.

Alam had a three-point solution to address the situation. Firstly, access to viable information from the institutes and the scientists, secondly, its comprehension from the journalists, and most importantly passing that information to the masses in jargon free language.

Later in a panel discussion director World Wide Federation (WWF), Sindh, Rab Nawaz, stressed upon the need for downstream water in the Sindh delta to keep the mangroves in healthy condition.

Welcome to the Queen of the Season

In Pakistan, spring celebrations are locally known as ‘Jashn-e-Baharan’. People all over the country celebrate the arrival of spring in the most festive way. When it comes to spring celebrations and festivals, Pakistani celebrations have a league of their own. Spring is celebrated with gardens full of multi color flowers, dancing people, music, trained animals and sky full of colorful kites.

Spring season is called ‘The Queen of the season’. When we see the beauty, glamour, fragrance and richness of this season, we are convinced with this saying fully and call out excitedly, “O the queen of seasons, we want to enjoy ourselves with your colors, delicacy, fragrance and charm. Please make us one with thee”. The spring season comes after the winter season which is the season of death and destruction. The winter season is the season of coolness frost and ice, having the tendency of freezing everything, even the life and all its activities. As soon as the winter season approaches, all the activities of the life cool down to stiffness and stillness. The birds stop twittering and cooing and seek shelter in some safe place. Some of them migrate to warmer regions of the world. Cold blooded animals such as frogs and crocodiles go to their winter sleep. Leaves of the trees wither away and no flower is seen anywhere. In cool and frosty areas, the streets are deserted as all the people are confined to their homes.

After the season of death and destruction, comes the season of life and rebirth. It springs from the eternal treasure of bliss as a great blessing, not only for man but for the whole world. The life suddenly wakes up. The bride of spring, with a charming smile on its rosy lips, casts a glance all around and soon there is a mysterious change, everywhere. First of all, chill body of earth gains the warmth of life from the nearing sun. Then grass, plants and trees begin to nourish wonderfully. Soon there is greenery everywhere. Plants and trees bear flowers and fruit, the grass is spread like velvet over the earth and fields are full of crops.
Spring season makes all the living beings happy. Little insects come out of their holes and begin to run in search of food. The birds begin to chirp, coo and twitter. The people also engage themselves in earning their livelihood, in addition to enjoying themselves with the beauty, purity and magical effect of the season.

Spring season, among the other seasons, is like the youth among the other periods of human life. It is moderate, pretty, charming, useful, flowery and fruitful. It bestows its favours upon all the creatures, especially on man who is the crown of creation. It is a pity that the people living in the areas near the poles and near the equator are deprived of this great blessing of God Almighty. It has a magical effect on body and spirit. It enables nightingales to sing sweet songs and poets to express lofty, matchless and immortal poetry. In short spring season is a blessed month which is also a blessing of God Almighty for His creation.

Lastly, it is concluded, that though all the seasons have there own charms and gifts for the world yet spring season is the most beautiful, most graceful and the prettiest of all the seasons. It is a longed for season with its multicolour panorama, its awful odours and its lasting effects.

Seven Wonders of the World

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were:

The Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt

The Great Pyramid at Giza was constructed between 2584 and 2561 BCE for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu (known in Greek as `Cheops') and was the tallest man-made structure in the world for almost 4,000 years. Excavations of the interior of the pyramid were only initiated in earnest in the late 18th and early 19th centuries CE and so the intricacies of the interior which so intrigue modern people were unknown to the ancient writers. It was the structure itself with its perfect symmetry and imposing height which impressed ancient visitors.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, if they existed as described, were built by Nebuchadnezzar II between 605-562 BCE as a gift to his wife. They are described by the ancient writer Diodorus Siculus as being self-watering planes of exotic flora and fauna reaching a height of over 75 feet (23 metres) through a series of climbing terraces. Diodorus wrote that Nebuchadnezzar's wife, Amtis of Media, missed the mountains and flowers of her homeland and so the king commanded that a mountain be created for her in Babylon. The contoversy over whether the gardens existed comes from the fact that they are nowhere mentioned in Babylonian history and that Herodotus, `the Father of History', makes no mention of them in his descriptions of Babylon. There are many other ancient facts, figures, and places Herodotus fails to mention, however, or has been shown to be wrong about. Diodorus, Philo, and the historian Strabo all claim the gardens existed. They were destroyed by an earthquake sometime after the 1st century CE.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was 40 feet (12 metres) high and presented the great god seated on a throne with skin of ivory and robes of hammered gold. The statue was created by the sculptor Phidias, who also worked on the Parthenon of Athens. Visitors to the site were dwarfed by the immense statue which was situated, and probably lighted, to produce great feelings of awe, wonder, and humility. After the rise ofChristianity, the Temple at Olympia was increadingly neglected and fell into ruin and the Olympic Games, then considered `pagan rites' were banned by the church. The statue was carried off to Constantinoplewhere it was destroyed at some point in an earthquake in the 5th or 6th centuries CE.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesos was completed in 550 BCE and was 425 feet (129 metres) high, 225 feet (69 metres) wide, and supported by 127 60 foot (18 metres) columns. The temple is described by every ancient writer who mentions it with awe and reverence for its beauty. It was destroyed 21 July 356 by a man named Herostratus who set fire to the temple in order that his name be remembered. Because of this, the Ephesians executed him and prohibited his name from being spoken or written down. The historian Theopompus, however, wishing to write a complete history of the temple, recorded his name for posterity. The temple was re-built twice, on a more modest scale, and the first building was later destroyed by the Goths while the second was completely laid to waste by a Christian mob led by Saint John Chrysostom in 401 CE.

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was built in 351 BCE as the tomb for the Persian Satrap Mauslos. It was 135 feet (41 metres) tall and ornamented with intricate sculpture. Mauslos and his wife, Artemisia, chose Halicarnassus as their capital and devoted themselves to making it the most beautiful and impressive city in the world. When Mauslos died in 353 BCE, Artemisia commissioned the tomb be built to match the splendor of the city the two of them had created. She died two years after him and her ashes were entombed with him in the building. It was destroyed by a series of earthquakes and lay in ruin until it was completely dismantled by the Knights of St. John of Malta in 1494 CE who used the stones in building their castle at Bodrum. It is from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus that the English word `mausoleum' is derived.

The Colossus at Rhodes is frequently imagined by those in the modern day as an enormous figure who stradled the harbor of the island city of Rhodes. This is due to 19th and early 20th century CE depictions of the statue but, actually, it was much closer to the Statue of Liberty in the Manhattan harbor of the United States of America. It was built between 292 and 280 BCE and stood over 110 feet (33 metres) high. The statue was commissioned to commemorate the defeat of the invading army of Demetrius in 304 BCE and stood for 56 years until it was brought down by an earthquake. According to the historian Strabo, it remained a popular tourist attraction even in ruin. Theophanes, another historian, recounts how these ruins were carted away in 654 CE to be melted down.

The Lighthouse at Alexandria was completed c. 280 BCE and stood 440 feet (134 metres) high. It was the tallest man-made structure after the pyramids of Giza and its light could be seen 35 miles out to sea. Ancient writers agree that the lighthouse was so beautiful they could not find words adequate to describe it. It was severely damaged in an earthquake in 956 CE and, by 1480 CE after further damage by earthquakes, it was gone.

Whatsapp Soldout

Facebook has bought messaging app WhatsApp in a deal worth a total of $19bn (£11.4bn) in cash and shares.

It is the social networking giant's biggest acquisition to date.

WhatsApp has more than 450 million monthly users and is popular with people looking to avoid text messaging charges.

In a statement announcing the deal, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg described WhatsApp's services as "incredibly valuable".

WhatsApp allows users to send messages over internet connections, avoiding text messaging fees. The company claims it is currently registering one million new users a day.

It makes money by charging users a subscription fee of $1 per year, although it offers a free model as well.

The BBC's Dave Lee explains why some analysts think it may yet prove to be a good buy.

Silicon Valley's newest billionaires The deal to buy it includes $4bn in cash and approximately $12bn-worth of Facebook shares, plus an additional $3bn in stock to WhatsApp's founders and employees at a later date.

On a conference call to discuss the deal, WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum said he planned to operate the firm "independently and autonomously". He will also become a member of Facebook's board of directors.

"We're excited and honoured to partner with Mark and Facebook as we continue to bring our product to more people around the world," Mr Koum said in a statement.

Mr Zuckerberg said the prospect of a deal was first floated just 11 days ago.

The Facebook founder said he believed WhatsApp was on track to have a billion users, but insisted he had no plans to place advertising on WhatsApp's interface, saying he did not think ads were the best way to
make money from messaging systems.

Once the deal is finalised, Mr Koum and co-founder Brian Acton are set to become Silicon Valley's newest billionaires.

WhatsApp has about 50 employees in total.

Potato Chip

In 1853, George Crum was a cook for the Carey Moon Lake House restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. The restaurant was well known for its delicious thick-sliced fried potatoes.

As local legend has it, a customer sent his plate of fries back to the kitchen complaining that they were too thick and requesting thinner slices.

Crum obliged the customer's request but the customer was still unhappy and again sent his fries back to the kitchen requesting thinner slices.

Indignent, Crum cut paper-thin slices of potatoes and deep fried them in fat used for cooking doughnuts. He retrieved the crunchy, crispy slices from the fryer, saturated them in salt, and served them to his customer - who loved them!

Word quickly spread about the potato chips and customers came from far and wide to get them, including the rich and famous like the Vanderbilts and Hiltons.

Crum soon opened his own restaurant and served his infamous "Saratoga Chips" in baskets and take-out boxes.

The rest of the story is... as they say... history. Today, this accidental invention is the most popular snack food in America.

Facebook to see an END Soon

Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in May of 2013. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” reportedly said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg reportedly went on to explain that starting May 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.  That gives users (and Facebook addicts) a year to adjust to liwithout Facebook.
“After May 15th, 2013 the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back after Facebook goes out of business.”
Zuckerberg said the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview to a source close to a friend. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”
