One thing is certain: when you're an intern, you have to work twice as hard to do everyone's grunt work in the office and still somehow manage to get valuable experience, make connections and contacts and get maximum exposure for your work and it is not that easy.
During my internship program, things I learned to do or not to do are listed below.
•Be enthusiastic: It will be seen and you will be given good work.
•Ask questions: Do not irritate your seniors, NEVER! Ask genuine questions.
•Be smart: No one likes training dumb cows. Be smart!
•Take notes: You might have a good, big brain but people forget.
•Find a mentor: Not everyone will be willing to teach, find one and stick to him.
•Find work: Go on a treasure hunt and look for work from seniors.
•Do donkey work: Its boring but sure shot way to be successful someday.
•Be on time: No one likes to see the red mark on an attendance book.
•Don’t misuse: Office phone, internet and printers are OFFICE’s phone, internet and printers.
•Be yourself: You are not somebody else so please don’t try to be.
•Never countdown the hours or minutes until you get off.
•Don’t brag: Sometimes you got to work on top secret projects that you shouldn’t talk about because they haven’t been revealed yet.
•Don’t burn bridges: Even if you hated working with somebody with every ounce of your soul, don’t tell that person off on your last day. Don’t decide you’re never going to talk to that person again. It’s a mistake.
•ENJOY!!
You may approach an internship as an audition for a full-time job with a company. Apply yourself to the internship as if it’s a permanent, full-time job, and it might turn into one. Companies are always looking for dedicated, hard-working individuals. If you use your internship to demonstrate your abilities, they won't want to let you go.
